It’s no wonder we fell absolutely in love after spending three days enjoying the well-kept downtown area and the many attractions surrounding this city on the Tennessee River.
The impressive Tennessee Aquarium
After dropping off luggage at our downtown hotel, the 4-Diamond Chattanoogan, we walked to the nearby Tennessee Aquarium, the world’s largest freshwater aquarium located directly on the river. Along with excited schoolchildren, we marveled at the many exhibits, some of which lovingly recreate the habitats of the world’s rivers, including the Amazon and the Rhine. We passed playful otters and stopped at a basin to touch a prehistoric looking sturgeon.
The riverfront and Chattanooga Choo Choo
After our visit to the aquarium, we walked along the riverfront, an area of paved and landscaped trails along the Tennessee River where various festivals are held throughout the year. We took one of the free electric shuttles to beautiful Chattanooga Choo Choo. Once a train station, the hotel is now a member of the Historic Hotels of America. The station lobby has been transformed into the hotel hall and on the tracks you will find wagons over 100 years old in which you can spend the night.
Fascinating attractions around Lookout Mountain
The next morning, we got up early to visit Lookout Mountain, about 15 minutes from downtown. After taking the train up the century-old Incline Railway up this rather steep mountain, we enjoy views of the river and city from above.
From there we walked through Point Park, part of the Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park, marveling at the old cannons and learning interesting facts about the history of this area at the adjacent museum. during the Civil War.
At Rock City Gardens, we pass through picturesque rock formations, through a giant crevasse, and over a 50-meter-long suspension bridge, accompanied by the beautiful music of hidden speakers that create the impression of a magical fairy garden. Upon reaching the top, an unforgettable view awaited us: from the top of a giant ledge called Lover’s Leap, there was a fabulous panorama of seven states!
Through The Passage to Coolidge Park
On the last day of our visit, we toured downtown Chattanooga again , passing the water-covered steps of The Passage, an art project that commemorates the seven Cherokee tribes that once inhabited the area. Crossing the 2,300-foot-long Walnut Street Bridge, the world’s longest pedestrian bridge, we arrived in Chattanooga’s North Riverside neighborhood and once again got views of the river and downtown from Coolidge Park.
